Wildlife Genetics Laboratory Announces Second Advanced DNA Training for April 2027

Guwahati, 27 October 2026:
Wildlife Genetics Laboratory (WGL) of Aaranyak has announced the second edition of its “Hands-on Training on Applications of DNA Technology in Wildlife Genetics and Forensics” to be held in Guwahati from 22–29 April 2027.
WGL was established in 2008 and is the only laboratory in North East India notified by the Government of Assam and Government of Meghalaya under Section 329(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, for wildlife forensic analysis. The lab has resolved over 200 wildlife forensic cases and is essential in supplying government agencies with scientific evidence for wildlife crime investigations.
In addition to its forensic services under the statutory recogniton, WGL is also dedicated to building scientific capacity in the region by training young researchers, academics and aspiring conservation scientists in advanced molecular techniques.
Following the success of the 1st training in April 2026, this eight day program will provide hands on experience in genetic sampling, DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, genetic data analysis, forensic species and individual identification, parentage testing, phylogenetics and population genetics.
“Northeast India is one of the most important biodiversity regions of the country, but access to specialized training in wildlife molecular genetics and forensics is limited. “We aim to fill the gap between academic learning and real world scientific applications,” said Udayan Borthakur, Director and Head of Wildlife Genetics Division, Aaranyak.
WGL combines expertise in conservation research and wildlife forensic investigations to build a new generation of scientists capable of producing reliable forensic evidence and using genetic tools for wildlife conservation and management. The initiative will also seek to build regional expertise and strengthen the science that underlies wildlife protection in North East India.
The training will be held at Wildlife Genetics Laboratory, Aaranyak Research Office, Kanaklata Path, Survey, Beltola, Guwahati–781028. Only eight participants will be chosen. Applications are invited from faculty, researchers and master’s students in relevant biological science disciplines of India.

Registration closes on 7 January 2027, at 5:00 PM IST.
