WGL Extends Wildlife Forensic Support to Chirang District Police

The Chirang District Police of Assam and Legal and Advocacy Division (LAD) of Aaranyak organised a sensitisation workshop on wildlife crime prevention and the important role the State Police Force can play in prevention and investigation of wildlife crime.

Dr Pranjal Kumar Das, Conservation Geneticist from Wildlife Genetics Laboratory made a presentation on benefits of use of DNA forensic in wildlife crime investigation. His talk focussed on the protocols to be followed in collection of wildlife samples, handling and packaging those and importance of application of DNA forensics in raising the level of conviction rate in wildlife crime case.

On behalf of the WGL, Aaranyak, Dr Das provided to two Wildlife Evidence Collection kits to Chirang Police.

The workshop was attended by a host of other senior police officials including ASP (Crime Branch) Amit Kumar Mahato, DSP (HQ) Ms Ritambhara Nath, DSP (DSB) Hemen Das, and SDPO Rupjyoti Dutta.
