WGL proudly marked the successful completion of the inaugural 8-day hands-on training programme on Applications of DNA Technology in Wildlife Genetics & Forensics, held from 22–29 April 2026 in Guwahati.

Eight researchers, academicians, and conservation practitioners received immersive training in modern molecular and forensic techniques critical for wildlife conservation. The programme covered:

🔬 DNA Extraction

🧪 PCR Techniques

📊 Genetic Data Analysis

🌳 Phylogeny Reconstruction

🧬 Genetic Diversity Assessment

🕵️ Wildlife Forensic Identification

Speaking on the occasion of the valedictory session of the training at Hotel Nakshatra, Guwahati today, Udayan Borthakur, Director & Head of the Wildlife Genetics Division, emphasized the importance of building skilled professionals who can apply DNA science in research, monitoring, and wildlife crime investigations.

Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, Secretary General and Executive Director of Aaranyak highlighted that such initiatives help bridge a crucial capacity gap in conservation and forensic sciences across Northeast India.

The training was delivered by in-house experts along with distinguished resource persons from Gauhati University, Cotton University and National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology.

🌿 The Wildlife Genetics Laboratory remains the only government-notified facility under  Section 329(4) of BNSS 2023 in Northeast India, supporting wildlife crime investigations and conservation research through advanced DNA analysis.

👏 Congratulations to all participants on becoming part of a growing network of professionals advancing science for wildlife protection.

Does DNA technology ignites your curiosity and fuel your passion for conservation? Stay tuned for future training opportunities!
