About

The Wildlife Genetics Laboratory (WGL) was established in the year 2008 by Aaranyak, a society for nature conservation in northeast India and a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation recognised by Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Government of India. The laboratory is equipped for the application of modern molecular techniques in wildlife research in India, undertaking conservation genetic research on various globally threatened species primarily in Northeast India. WGL, Aaranyak is the first laboratory in the non-government sector notified by the Government of Assam  under Section 329 (4) of the BNSS 2023 to facilitate wildlife genetic and wildlife forensic analysis.

Landscape genetic and physiological monitoring of Western hoolock gibbons in Northeast India

The Western Hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock), occurring south of the Dibang-Brahmaputra River system in northeast India, is threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation. As an arboreal species and true brachiator, fragmentation of habitat, particularly high canopy cover, has resulted in several isolated Hoolock gibbon populations across the landscape. Isolation affects biological processes and genetic diversity, which affects health and survival in the short and long term. To develop an effective conservation action plan and ensure the species' long-term survival in north-eastern India, a multi-disciplinary approach has been employed to analyse spatial and temporal changes in habitat and genetic diversity, estimate population size, and assess physiological stress in gibbon populations. Aaranyak is partnering with The Habitats Trust (THT) on this work, where THT is providing crucial financial support required for the project.
