Wildlife Genetics Laboratory (WGL) of Aaranyak, a Govt. of Assam and Govt. of Meghalaya notified laboratory for wildlife genetics & forensics under Section 329 (4) of the BNSS, 2023, is organizing an 8-days training titled “Hands-on Training on Applications of DNA Technology in Wildlife Genetics and Forensics”, from April 22 to 29, 2027.

With a distinguished track record spanning nearly two decades, the WGL has established a strong presence across three countries, with extensive field engagement in seven states of Eastern and Northeastern India and contributions to nearly two dozen major research projects. As the only dedicated facility for conservation genetics research and wildlife forensic investigations in Northeast India, WGL occupies a unique and strategically important position in the region's wildlife conservation landscape. The laboratory has played a pivotal role in strengthening wildlife law enforcement and combating illegal wildlife trade, providing critical scientific evidence in the successful resolution of over 200 wildlife crime cases. Through its specialized forensic expertise, WGL continues to support evidence-based investigations and the effective implementation of statutory provisions under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, reinforcing the vital role of science in wildlife crime prevention, investigation, and prosecution.

About the Training:

 Broad topics to be covered:

1. Genetic sampling techniques

2. DNA extraction from multiple types of biological samples

3. Selection of DNA markers, primer designing

4. PCR and electrophoresis techniques

5. DNA sequence and microsatellite allelic data generation and analysis

6. Forensic species identification, individual identification and matching, parentage test

7. Phylogeny reconstructions from DNA sequence data

8. Analysis of genetic diversity and population genetic structure

 

Venue: Wildlife Genetics Laboratory situated at HN 12, Kanaklata Path, Survey, Beltola, Guwahati – 781028.

 

Capacity: 8 seats (on a first-come, first-served basis, to be notified by the organizers after processing of the applications)

 

Eligibility: Open for faculty, researchers, and master's students in relevant disciplines of biological sciences, including molecular biology, biotechnology, zoology, botany, wildlife sciences, etc. Only Indian nationals are eligible to apply.

 

Registration Fees: Rs. 25,000 (to be paid directly to Aaranyak bank account details to be communicated during the selection process. No payment in cash or foreign currency is accepted).

 

Last Date of Registration: Registration closes on 7th January 2027, 5:00 PM (GMT+5:30).

​Terms & Conditions:

1. Only the online mode of applications will be accepted.

2. All applications shall be scrutinized before acceptance. Registration fees need to be paid within 15 days after receiving confirmation of acceptance from the organizers of the training.

3. The training fee paid will not be refunded against any cancellation of registration after 7th January 2027. A refund of 100% of the fees will be made for any cancellation of participation prior to 7th January 2027, 5:00 PM (GMT+5:30).

4. Applicants sponsored by their host institution need to produce a declaration letter on fund availability forwarded by the department/lab head or the institution head.

5. The training fees exclude lodging and food beyond training hours. Trainees should make their own arrangements for their accommodation. However, the organizers may be requested for assistance in finding suitable accommodation near the laboratory.

6. Meals during the training hours and any travel as part of the training objectives will be covered by the training fees.

7. The Director & Head of the Wildlife Genetics Division of Aaranyak reserves the right to reject an application, citing no reasons.
